I’m on a short vacation in Tampere, Finland, where I made a successful trip to a local yarn store, Nurja. I bought some yarn for a historical stocking project I’m planning, and I thought more about how the future of this Substack will look.

Successful Purchases

Finland’s second city lies almost exactly 100 miles (160 km) north of the capital Helsinki, and it’s often referred to as the “Manchester of Finland” (or simply manse) due to its role as the centre of the textile industry in the 19th century. Fibre arts in general are still alive and well in Finland (you can buy decent wool yarns in most supermarkets), but that’s possibly even truer in Tampere than in Helsinki.
